Ten hidden gems you might have missed

Since I tend to march to the beat of a very different drummer, I am sharing my top ten hidden gems rather than just showing you my top ten posts. After all, you’ve probably already seen the most popular posts of all time in the right sidebar. :-)

Here they are, in no particular order. I hope you draw encouragement, learn something new and useful, or gather ideas to solve a problem or two!

Vivid

Gray. Washed out. Worn out. Just plain tired.

Do you feel as a mom sometimes that you just don’t have what it takes anymore?

What love language do you speak?

Have you ever met with a teacher, computer tech, doctor, lawyer, or other professional, and found your eyes glazing as they used words and phrases that were meaningless to you, but were the heart and soul, the language, of their profession?

It’s frustrating, isn’t it?

Are you being sugared off?

We have seasons in our lives of joy, sorrow, of challenge and triumph.

Often, they are intermingled, but there are times when a particularly difficult one seems to last for so very long.

Grit

Ahh, the feel of the warm sand at the beach as you curl your toes and gather up its gritty wonderfulness.

We bring those grains home with us, those wonderful reminders of the salty ocean breezes, the loud cries of the gulls, the joy and peace of the day.

Those eventually annoying, can’t get them out of our cars, our clothes, or off the floors, irritating specks of sand.

The whole experience reminds me of our relationships.

Are you raising a praise junkie?

Good girl!  Good boy!  Good job!

Are those phrases a familiar part of your parenting repertoire?

As much as we believe we are being supportive and loving of our children when we use these phrases, we actually might be raising a junkie.

That’s right. You heard me.

A praise junkie.

How to hold that BIG conversation about money with your Boomerang

You are a parent, possibly with younger kids still at home, and one day, you get that dreaded call from one of your 20-something adult children, whether they have been out in the workplace or are nearing the end of their college years: “Mom, I can’t afford to live on my own. I need to move back home.”

Although some of these kids want to get back out into the world as soon as possible, too many take advantage of the situation. It is just soooo nice to have all the comforts of home at their fingertips again, minus those nasty things like rent and bills. You provide comforts they could not afford on their own, things like a nice home that is fully furnished,  a stocked refrigerator,  a plethora of electronics, and a soft bed which keeps them warm and comfy every day, until they decide to greet the morning…around noontime.

How do you handle the latter sort, who just seems to have settled in for the long haul, because it is just easier to live off with mom and dad than to make their own financial way?

An offering of loaves and fish

Do you think sometimes that you don’t really have much to offer to others when they are in need?

That your words are too ordinary to help?

That because you are in a hole financially, emotionally, relationally or spiritually that you couldn’t possibly have anything of use?

Leading, following, and embracing

Have you ever thought of a family or organization in this way, that the leader cannot lead without followers?

And have you ever thought about the importance of each and every component of the organization?

I am not talking about mere lip service here, dear readers, where you repeat the mantra that there is no shame in doing or being “x”.

I am talking about embracing each and every part.

Praying in the midst of a storm

Have you ever had a friend or relative suggest prayer-gasp!-as a means of helping you find your way out of the depths of a personal storm?

Uh huh.

I’m sure you practically bit your tongue off so you didn’t drive them out of your life forever welcomed that suggestion with open arms.

Prayer? Really?

I remember thinking prayer was for the really pious, for the cute little old white haired, perfectly manicured ladies who went to Mass a hundred times a week.
