Five Minute Friday-Ache

 The ache of motherhood.

It’s like being at a banquet and eating the best dessert ever topped with bits of jalepanos and drops of vinegar.

Sweet.

And oh so very snappy.

And also sometimes unpleasantly sour.

Bites of deliciously delightful love, that somehow are layered with occasional tastes of hot anger, and sometimes, too, a deep, sour shame at being impatient and imperfect as a mom.

From the pall of the constant morning sickness to the cloud lifting joy of holding your baby for the first time.

From the heart hardening teens to the melting with love young adulthood when your child says, “I’m sorry. You were so right.” (Yes, this really can happen!)

From the heartbreak of watching your children compete, as they each secretly wish they possessed just one or two of their sibling’s best traits, to the eventual realization that they are each special and have gifts and strengths in their own right.

The stretching and growing and falling and lifting, the ache that comes as you build your mommy muscles on the job.

As difficult as it can be at times, I wouldn’t give up my seat at the table for anything.

How about you?

Every Friday I join Lisa-Jo over at The Gypsy Mama for her Five Minute Friday prompts, where ladies from around the globe join in writing because we want to, not because we have to. We write for fun, for joy, for discovery. We just write without worrying if it’s just write or not. Won’t you join us?

    • Welcome, Rebecca! Spicy, indeed. I know that sometimes parenting was like being exposed to a gentle heat, other times, it was fire crackery hot!

  7. Perfectly said:) No one ever really tells you how hard being a mother really is. How much love and pain, joy and sadness can come from being a mother. If women had been told I wonder how many would still willing to take on the job of motherhood:)

  8. They don’t, do they, Anna-Marie? I am guessing most of us would have soldiered ahead, figuring our kids would be way better behaved than most… :-)
